Lauren Davies, co-founder of Lola Cove Films is a Cambridge graduate whose current original feature screenplay THE UNDERTOW has received development support from Creative England, Film 4ward, and Northern Film & Media. THE UNDERTOW, a coming of age surf feature film is in development and moving towards production. Lauren left a career in law to become a commercial fiction novelist, publishing 3 books, WATER WINGS, ANGEL ON AIR, and SERVE COOL with Time Warner. She is currently developing the screenplay adaptation of WATER WINGS. Lauren was the story creator and writer of the BAFTA-nominated, innovative multi-media football game I AM PLAYR, winner of a Cannes Gold Lion Award 2012, which combines film content, gaming technology and social media. Lauren wrote the multi award-winning feature documentary WAVERIDERS, which had worldwide release, won an IFTA and the Dublin Film Festival Audience Award among other awards and was nominated for a prestigious Grierson Award. Lauren’s other writing credits include CLOUD 9, a documentary about 11-times world champion surfer Kelly Slater, which achieved 877 hours of worldwide television, and THE TONY HAWK SHOW TV documentary about the world’s best skater. Lauren was selected for the BFI London Film Festival’s talent development scheme Think-Shoot-Distribute 2012.
My favourite surf movie is probably ‘Big Wednesday’ because it is a feature film that combines authentic surfing and incredible footage with a moving narrative dealing with issues of the era. This is what I aspire to do with our feature, defying stereotypes to bring surfing to the mainstream audience.
