SURFING & SHARKS, Dir. Julian Watson, AUS, 2011, 55 mins

A film about facing fears. In South Africa between Durban and JBay lies a thousand kilometers of untamed oceanic paradise, the Wild Coast. Every year in June the peak swell season kicks in and simultaneously the sardine run begins,  drawing in a complex web of ocean predators to the coastal fringes including many species of sharks. For surfers Andrew Lange, Lungani Memani and Avuyile Ndamase this is also their playground.

This documentary goes up close with these surfers exploring their families’ traditions and how they come to terms with the very real threat that lurks beneath the surface every time they paddle out. Surfers, shark researchers and ecologists offer objective, first hand insight on one of the ocean’s most feared predators, exploring real life solutions to existing problems and issues around the relationship between surfers and sharks.
