The Approaching Lines Room is a space where we’re showcasing an exciting collection of artists, photographers, shapers, artisans, brands and charities.  We have an incredible gallery space curated for you as well as a hand picked selection of lovely things for sale from International surf periodicals that transgress the boundaries between surf and art to beautiful beanies knitted by grannies. The room is open throughout the festival and free to attend so pop by and take a look, we’d be glad to see you down there. We also have a number of exciting events taking place over the course of the weekend (some of which are ticketed but all of which are free!) And if it all gets too much, you can always stop be the National Trust’s ‘Green Room’ for a nice cup of tea!

TICKETED EVENTS

At 4pm on Sunday we’re hosting the launch of award winning photographer Mark Leary’s much anticipated book Salt & Wax. Four years in the making, Salt and Wax explores the minutiae of surfing, capturing those moments, with a traditional plate camera, that sum up just what it means to be a surfer on these cold, unforgiving shores. The launch will include a talk with Mark followed by a Q+A. To reserve your free space on the guest list email:: [email protected] or sign up in the Approaching Lines Room. 4.20 Sunday Afternoon we have a great afternoon of talks lined up. Following on from the London Premiere of The Endless Winter we have master craftsman James Otter of Otter Surfboards hosting a talk about the art of design and wooden surfboard construction. After which we’re delighted to be hosting a talk with Tim Nunn and Sharpy who are two of the UK’s leading surf photographers. Tim Nunn’s work has appeared in publications across the globe and is the former Editor of Wavelength Magazine. Sharpy is the editor of Carve magazine as well as contributing to the leading international surf magazines he has famously scored the cover of all the magazines in the UK. So if you’ve ever wondered about the story behind the image or just wanted to know the ins and outs of talking great photos, now is your chance to find out. MUSIC

At 8pm on Thursday night we have folk troubador Matthew P in the house, we’re delighted to host him at the festival and in fact the title track for his new album features on this year’s LS/FF trailer. No tickets necessary although space is limited and ticket holders to the evening’s screenings will have priority!

At 8.15 on Saturday night Auction for the Promise Club are bringing an acoustic slice of their rarified rock to the AL Room.  They’ve had a great year, they’ve played the Olympics, played the Paralympics  and have been featured on the Kaiser Chiefs Emerging Icons Album so we’re stoked to have them at the festival. No tickets necessary although space is limited and ticket holders to the evening’s screening will have priority.

GALLERY OPEN THROUGHOUT FESTIVAL

Throughout the festival we are hosting a gallery of work from Tim Nunn, Sharpy and Richie Hopson. Richie cut his teeth as a skate photographer in the early 90’s working for underground titles from Sidewalk to Freeride Magazine. Richie is now a leading portrait and lifestyle photographer and his work has appeared from in publications from Huck to The Independent and has shot for brands from Levi’s to Paul Smith.

We are also delighted to be hosting a gallery show of work from artist Richard Bull. A student of Chelsea School of Art ‘87-’92, this award-winning Creative Director gained early commercial enlightenment via the estate of Jimi Hendrix and a surreal stationing at Graceland for the estate of Elvis Presley. He quickly gained notoriety  within the UK and US music industries, with a string of album and single art finding it’s way into to the Top 10 and several to Number 1.

Parallel to the art created for the music Industry, works have been showcased by publishers and periodicals, Taschen, Arena, i-D, Creative Review, Design Week. D&AD, 125, Blag, Laurence King, Getty Stone, Index, DGV Gestalten, Pictured. Graphis in the USA and +81, Selfish and iDee Co in Japan.

In a celebration of UK board design, we invited 4 shapers who approach their art from very different angles, to showcase their craft. This year we’re thrilled to have Otter Surfboards who manufacture bespoke wooden boards; Cork Surfboards who are exploring innovative new materials for board design combining cork and Kevlar; Will Powered who is  exploring the boundaries of asymmetrics and hulls and Thirdshade who have taken a classic fish design and reinterpreted it with a modern twist.
