SATURDAY 8th November – The Line Up
SESSION 1: 3.00pm SNAKES & SURF BREAKS >> TICKETS
This Saturday Matinee is accompanied by a special filmmaker Q+A’s
UK PREMIERE: Snakes and Surf Breaks Dir. Luka Raubenheimer
In search of waves and one of Indonesia’s most elusive reptiles. Featuring sublime surfing from Jaleesa Vincent, a nod to the aesthetic of Wes Anderson and a good dose of wildlife and wild times, this is story of friendship and obsession, exploring our complicated relationships with each other and the natural world,
This 3 month expedition across the Indonesian archipelago in search of a Cobra and uncrowded waves journeys through some of thickest tropical jungles, flooded caves, remote coastlines and dense urban sprawls of one of the world’s fastest growing countries. Capturing all the moments of tension, chaos and absurdity that comes with a wild and mostly unplanned chase, it’s a glorious exploration of our dreams and why we follow them.
UK PREMIERE: Empties Dir. Nuno Diaz. In a remote corner of the world, where the ocean meets the sky, gigantic waves emerge as true natural works of art. Majestic colossi of nature, each wave is a unique spectacle that displays the raw power and fluid elegance of the sea. Breathtaking and ethereal short with mind-blowing cinematography from the award-winning filmmaker – a meditation in the art of the ocean.
LONDON PREMIERE: Ziran – Tools for Self Expression Dir: Bella Bunce. A celebration of alternative surf craft and the pure joy of surfing for fun and self-expression. Filmed over the course of a year along the rugged coastlines of Cornwall and Ireland, this surf film follows the shapers and friends behind Ziran Surfboards, capturing the beauty of handmade boards and the soulful connection between surfers and the sea.
SESSION 2: 6.00pm KINGDOM OF THE EVENING >> SOLD OUT
Accompanied by a special Q+A with surf adventurer Kepa Acero
UK PREMIERE Kingdom of the Evening Dir. Clint Davis
In 2010, young adventurer Kepa Acero, travelling alone in search of empty waves, met a 15-year-old grom named Yassine. Though they barely spoke the same language, they shared waves, tagines and an unspoken connection. Fifteen years later, Kepa and Yassine – now known as Snoopy, and a local legend in Taghazout -will meet again for the first time. But life has changed—just like Morocco. The dusty fishing village has transformed: boutique hotels line the shore, and Anchor Point is packed with digital nomads chasing Wi-Fi and waves.
They embark on a journey to find what once was—empty line-ups, pure stoke, and that elusive feeling of freedom. But things don’t go as planned… The dream they’re chasing may not exist anymore…
One thing will never change: hope. They still believe that somewhere along this coast, there is a wave just waiting. Empty and perfect. Undiscovered. Or at least, that the story they keep telling themselves…
A tender and honest tale of rediscovery and the perils and rewards of retreading old paths with one of our favourite surf adventurers Kepa Acero. Come for the film and stay for a lifetime of tales with our long time friend.
WORLD PREMIERE: Winter Kooks Dir: Katie Tozer and Teegan Neame. Winter Kooks dives into the lives of two land locked Alberta surfers embracing the raw intensity of cold-water surfing. Set on the frigid glacier fed rivers, this heartwarming film follows their journey as they seek solace, adrenaline, and connection in one of the most unlikely surf spots on Earth. A powerful story of finding warmth and community in unexpected places.
UK PREMIERE: Frostbite Dir: Oscar James. Australian surf phenomenon Ned Hart, dives into the brutal beauty of Ireland and Scotland for the first time in his career. A hypnotic dance of courage, colour, and cold. This is cold-water surfing reborn.
Accompanied by The Shorties shortlist film: From Hands to Feet Dir: Tom Bing – the very best short films from homegrown filmmakers.
SESSION 2: 8.40pm GWYNNIK & OTHER STORIES >> SOLD OUT
Accompanied by a series of special filmmaker Q+As
WORLD PREMIERE: Gwynnik Dir. Seth Hughes.
“Gwynnik marks the third film Mike and I have created together, completing a trilogy alongside Cynevin and Hireth,” explains award winning filmmaker and outstanding cinematographer Seth Hughes. “This final chapter, Gwynnik, meaning “little fair one” in Cornish is a return home. A slowing down. A reflection on the importance of family. Filmed over two years across Cornwall and Brittany, it’s a visual record of Mike’s evolving relationship with the ocean. After years of travelling the world as a professional surfer, he’s now more rooted in West Penwith, where his connection to the sea has shifted, less about chasing perfect waves, more about the holistic experience of being in the water. Most of the waves in this film would be considered average by surf-film standards, and that’s intentional. We wanted Gwynnik to be a gentle reminder that beauty exists in all conditions, that joy and meaning can be found in the everyday rhythm of the sea.”
The waves may be considered ‘average’ but Mike’s surfing – equal parts style and delight – is not. A triumph of a film cinematographically, sonically and in terms of the feelings you’re left with long after the credits roll.
Accompanied by very special Q&A with poet, surfer and writer Mike Lay
UK PREMIERE Misean Tobann Dir. Gabriella Zagni. When a rare swell lights up the charts, big wave surfer Andrew Cotton calls on young chargers Ben Larg and Louis Thomas-Hudson for a last-minute strike mission to Ireland — with filmmaker Gabriella Zagni in tow. The goal: a heavy wave Cotty hasn’t surfed in six years, and one neither Ben nor Louis have ever seen… what could go wrong?
LONDON PREMIERE Alice Dir. Gabriel Novis. The award-winning short documentary features surfer, skateboarder, artist, and transgender woman Alice Barbosa, born in Maceió, in the Northeast of Brazil. Alice crafts her identity and finds ways to exist in a society still rife with prejudice and violence. Beautifully shot and sensitively told, this film is a call for presence, for change, for joy in defiance.
UK PREMIERE: The Incredible Paulk Dir. Caroline Losneck and Christoph Gelfand. Aaron Paulk has always found a way to navigate uncertainty — but this time, the path forward is less clear than ever. Living with a progressive eye disorder that might one day lead to blindness, Aaron has become a top visually impaired competitive surfer. He has no central vision, only peripheral vision, and he uses his other senses to surf and navigate around his home on Maui. When the massive wildfires devastate Lahaina, Maui in August 2023, the life Aaron has carefully built for himself is upended once again. An inspiring tale of perseverance.
UK PREMIERE: Pond Dir: Cameron Staunton. One of our favourite Cornish longboarders, Izzy Henshall explores the points and beaches of East Coast Australia on a sublime two week road trip.
Accompanied by The Shorties shortlist film: No Place Like Home Dir: Gabriella Zagni – the very best short films from homegrown filmmakers.
