SESSION 1: 6:30pm MAYA & THE WAVE
Plus very special filmmaker Q+A
LONDON PREMIERE Maya & The Wave Dir Stephanie Johnes. This must-see, multi award-winning documentary is the kind that rarely comes along in surfing. It takes an honest and frank look behind the curtain of the big wave surfing scene, tracking the career of pioneering charger Maya Gabeira and the obstacles she has faced both in and out of the water, from her battles with ingrained misogyny through to a near death experience in some of the planet’s most deadly waves. Maya’s career has been a series of hurdles – when male big wave surfers fell they were praised for their hard charging exploits, when Maya fell she was told she was not good enough for the line-up. Even the surfing establishment overlooked her ground-breaking exploits. But Maya had an inner resilience and was ready for the fight. Facing down spinal injuries, sexism, drownings and hold downs, this is not just a big wave story, this is a big story.
“Jaw dropping” Variety
“Breathtaking … tracks Gabeira’s triumph over industry sexism and a catastrophic wipe-out that nearly cost her career and her life.” The Guardian
