SURFILMMUSIC – JACK JOHNSON – UK TOUR

LS/FF Presents. A lifetime in the making, we’re stoked to host this very special premiere screening tour of the highly anticipated,  SURFILMUSIC celebrating the story so far of one of surfing’s most loved, multi-faceted creatives – Jack Johnson. These special screenings are coming to London, the Southwest, the Northeast, Ireland and more this June, see below for details.

More than a documentary, the must-see SURFILMUSIC is an intimate insight into  the evolution of Jack Johnson from rising North Shore surf star, to iconic surf filmmaker to world-renowned, stadium filling, multi-platinum musician.

Directed by longtime friend and collaborator, the Grammy award-winning Emmet Malloy, the film traces how a brutal injury at Pipeline – requiring some 150 stitches and knocking out his front teeth – ended Johnson’s competitive surfing career and altered his life trajectory. His next step, into making surf films with close friends – think the hugely influential Thicker than Water and September Sessions with the likes of Kelly Slater, Chris Malloy, Rob Machado – became the bedrock for a broad creative life that contains multitudes – those moments captured in and out of the water later surfacing in his songwriting. Blending beautiful, rare footage from these formative films with personal and family archives, accompanied by present-day reflections, the film explores how lived experience, friendship, and exploration shaped the sound and stories behind the music.

‘When I think about making things – music or film – friendship is the most important part.’

Jack Johnson

Featuring Jack Johnson, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Gerry Lopez, Chris Malloy, G. Love, Ben Harper, John Florence, Emmett Malloy, Kim Johnson, and more, with a beautiful score by Jack Johnson and Hermanos Gutiérrez. In loving memory of Tamayo Perry.

SURFILMUSIC premiered at SXSW and has been featured everywhere from the likes of Variety and Rolling Stone to HUCK, Monster Children and Surfer Mag for good reason – at its heart this story is an education in the art of freedom, friendship and fuelling the independent creative spirit.
