BIG vs SMALL

WINNER: LS/FF 10 SPIRIT OF THE FESTIVAL presented by Aluna Coconut Rum

BIG vs SMALL Dir. Minna Dufton

Nazare is one of the most dangerous, challenging surf spots on the planet. Even in small swells the waves are powerful and unpredictable – but when huge Atlantic storms pulse up through the undersea canyon and funnel into this small stretch of beach – the line-up is transformed into shifting range of giant peaks and cauldrons of whitewater. It is here, amongst a small band of elite surfers, that Joana Andrade tests her limits.

The journey for Portugal’s only female big wave surfer hasn’t always been smooth. Minna Dufton’s intimate portrait follows Joana as she pushes herself through the physical and emotional challenges needed to overcome the very real dangers of the world’s biggest waves. Journeying from the dark peaks of Nazare to the frozen waters of Finland this is a remarkable story of strength, friendship, facing demons and the art of letting go.
